Emma Doherty
Senior Mining Engineer
What is your role, and how long have you been at MGT?
I’m Emma Doherty, the senior mining engineer. I work with Nicole in the Mine Planning department, and I’ve been at MGT for over 4 years now.
What sparked your interest in this field?
When I was younger and living in Wales, I went on an underground mine tour – that really sparked my interest in this industry. Later on, when I was at uni, I majored in chemical engineering, specialising in minerals. Over time, I thought mining could me more interesting so that’s what I pursue.
Share a memorable project story.
A memorable project was working on a diamond project for the first time, which involved underground design work – it was quite exciting.
What is a quote that has stuck with you?
“If you enjoy what you do, you won’t work a day in your life.”
What advice would you give to aspiring (senior) mining engineers?
I loved doing site work, and see that as a vital part of gaining the necessary experience in this line of work – being hands-on gives you a better understanding of what you see on the screen (e.g. when looking at mine models). But I’d definitely recommend this and travelling for work before starting a family and having kids, that way you have more flexibility. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it or that you’re not capable. As long as you’re trying to do your best, people will be more than willing to help.
Who in your team would you like to give a shout-out to?
Nicole – she is my first point of contact and I’ve known her the longest. She lives and breathes her work, and is persistent to ensure it’s done well.
